Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment
What Is It?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment is a medical treatment in which the entire body is exposed to 100% pure oxygen in a chamber for short periods of time. The treatment is completely painless and safe. Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment provides the optimal environment for the body to heal itself by filtering pressurized air to dissolve oxygen directly into the plasma, fluids, tissues, and organs with oxygen.
Oxygen is vital to every cell of our bodies. When there is disease or injury, body tissues are often deprived of health-giving oxygen, further complicating the problem. Oxygen given in this manner speeds healing for many conditions. The chamber is used in order for the oxygen to get to the farthest extremities of the body. The oxygen must be concentrated and put under gentle
pressure. The sensation to the patient is similar to that which one experiences during the take-off and landing of an airplane.
How Does It Work?
The hyperbaric chamber is filled with compressed air from 2 to 4.5 pounds psi. This is equivalent to being11 feet below sea level. This increased pressure allows the blood to absorb additional oxygen, increasing oxygen uptake by the body. The uptake allows for increased circulation to areas with swelling or inflammation, and then the swelling or inflammation decreases. There are no dangerous side effects reported with Hyperbaric Therapy. Some people experience a mild discomfort in the ears, similar to being in an airplane, while others may have
some slight fatigue after the first few sessions. This is due to the body clearing itself of toxic debris that has built up in the body.
What You Can Expect
The sessions typically last about an hour. The chamber will seem smaller until it is fully inflated. Once it is inflated, there is enough room to move around comfortably inside. If you experience pressure in your ears, you should try yawning while stretching your mouth as wide as possible. You should not go into the chamber if you have a cold or the flu or any other sinus problems, inner ear canal problems, or if you have been drinking. You should not wear cologne or perfume in the chamber or drink large amounts of fluids before entering. If you are claustrophobic, you may not want to enter the chamber.
The potential benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment include dramatically improving blood circulation, speeding the healing process, stimulating the immune mechanism, decreasing the insulin requirements, improving metabolism, improving gastrointestinal functions, increasing new bone cell formations, stimulating wound healing, reducing cardiac workload, and improving
memory and brain functions.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment can be effective for the following conditions:
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Multiple chemical sensitivity
